This Week

Fall Work Day

Saturday, November 18

Everyone is invited to help spruce up LRUCC's grounds and building at the Fall Work Day, on Saturday, November 18 from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. While the main focus is on leaf and brush removal, trimming tree branches and outdoor planting, there are plenty of indoor tasks as well. A list of Work Day jobs will be posted in the atrium and social hall. Families are welcome; there are jobs suitable for helpers of all ages. Come dressed for the weather and outdoor workers will need to bring gloves and additional yard and garden tools such as rakes, clippers, pole trimmers, branch loppers, shovels and garden trowels. Members of the Board of Trustees will be on hand to assign work areas and tasks, provide instructions and answer questions. We hope to see you on the 18th!

Thanksgiving Special Collection – Deacons and Pastors Benevolence Fund

Sunday, November 19

While we collect offering every Sunday, several times during the year we collect for special off-budget benevolence funds. Our next special offering will occur on Sunday, November 19 when we will conduct our once-a-year collection to replenish the Deacons’ and Pastors’ Benevolence Fund. The Benevolence Fund is modest, but it is a critical part of our ministry. Our pastors – or the Chair of Deacons – can use this fund to provide emergency confidential assistance to members or friends. In the past the fund has been used, e.g., when a family breadwinner is between jobs, or facing eviction, or confronted with unanticipated medical expenses. The assistance is always confidential, and it is always appreciated. Please be generous for the Benevolence Funds offering this year. Please mark "Thanksgiving Offering" on the memo line of your check or use the special Thanksgiving envelope so we know where to direct these donations.

Multiracial and Multicultural (M&M) Church Listening Session

Sunday, November 19

The Board of Outreach and Social Justice and a sub-group, the Racial Justice Coalition, have begun exploratory conversations about Little River UCC's becoming a multiracial and multicultural church. These listening sessions are an opportunity for the members of the congregation to discuss the process and ask questions, make suggestions, and more. Please review the official UCC Statement before attending the session and come prepared with questions and thoughts. We will meet in Room 8 at 11:15 am.

Footsteps to Hawaii

Sundays, November 19 & 26

Finally, we have received color brochures with the itineraries for the trips to Hawaii in August, 2018, and January/February, 2019. A brief meeting to distribute these, and to answer any questions, will be held after the service this Sunday and next in the conference room. The first opportunity to sign up for either trip will be December 3. The itineraries look great, filled with religiously important, informative, exciting, and beautiful things to see and do, plus very nice hotels. Hawaii is an expensive place to visit, but these trips should be well worth their cost.

November Winter Coat Drive

Sundays, November 19 & 26

Every Sunday throughout the month of November, the Board of Outreach and Social Justice will once again be collecting winter coats (especially men’s XL and up), hats, scarves, and gloves as well as blankets, sleeping bags, and sturdy adult backpacks or book bags for distribution to the homeless at Thrive DC. Thrive is currently facing a $400,000 cut in government funding but is continuing its annual coat distribution dates as usual.

All donations should be brought to church by Sunday, November 26 for delivery to Thrive the following week. Questions? Ask This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it of the Board of Outreach and Social Justice.

White Gift Christmas Tags And White Gift Service With Dinner

Sunday, December 10

Tags Available Now through Sunday, December 3

The White Gift Service is a beloved Little River tradition in which our members reenact the Nativity scene, then follow the Magi to offer gifts honoring the Christ child. In preparation for that joyful service, our White Gift Christmas tree stands in the atrium to express the Christmas hopes of young children from low-income families served by ACCA Child Development Center, Main Street Child Development Center, and Shaw Community Ministry. Allow yourself the pleasure of sharing God’s love with a child this Christmas season! Gift tags and a sign-up sheet (used this year again to assist the Board of Outreach and Social Justice in tracking gifts) will be available from Friday, November 17 through Sunday, December 3. Please take only as many tags as you are able to provide gifts.

Please also plan to attend our second annual White Gift Dinner following the service on December 10. The Board of Outreach and Social Justice would like to celebrate the season of giving with a catered pasta dinner. A sign-up sheet to RSVP is available in the atrium near the White Gift Tree; please let us know if you are able to attend so we can plan to have enough food. We are asking for a few contributions of salad and dessert with sign-ups for those also available in the atrium. Join us to come together as community!
