Twenty-fourth Sunday After Pentecost
10:00 am Worship

Sunday, October 30

This Sunday, we celebrate Reformation Sunday!

499 years have passed since Martin Luther nailed 95 theses to a door, thus (inadvertently) launching the Protestant Reformation. Five centuries later, how is the church today in need of being reformed anew?

Come this Sunday to hear a sermon on this very question! Our service this Sunday will be led by a group of church members, including Chris Weakley (preaching), Natalie Stapert (Time with Children), Jason Thompson (retelling the story of Zaccheus), Don Wallace (liturgizing) and Janet Mackey (leading the rest of the service).

Come on out for worship this Sunday at 10:00 am to show them your love and support!

This Week

Shaw Community Ministry Thanksgiving Collection

Sunday, October 30

The Board of Outreach and Social Justice will be collecting in-kind donations to create Thanksgiving baskets for Shaw Community Ministry. Each year, Shaw Community Ministry gives gifts of food to residents of the Shaw neighborhood in Washington, DC in order to provide low-income families with supplies to make their own holiday meals. The goal this year is to feed at least 75 families a Thanksgiving meal through donations by several local UCC churches. Little River UCC is committed to providing 20 of the Thanksgiving baskets.

Shaw Community Ministry has put together a list of requested items for each basket. Each basket should also contain a $25 Giant grocery store gift card for families to buy fresh items for their holiday meal. Reusable grocery bags with the shopping lists and a sign-up sheet will available in the atrium on Sunday.

If you are interested in participating, please sign up at the table in the atrium for a bag of requested items (please take a bag), a gift card, or both. All donations should be brought to church by Sunday, November 6 for delivery to Shaw the following week.

Next Sunday and every Communion Sunday (normally the first Sunday of every month), we invite your gifts of non-expired, non-perishable staple food items, which are placed in our church’s FISH (For Immediate Sympathetic Help) pantry and used to help the hungry in our community. Food is distributed by FISH; to local charities including Food for Others, Alternative House, and Thrive DC; and to individuals who ask for assistance from the pastoral staff.

Individual pre-packed bags of food are prepared for use by FISH and church staff to respond to immediate needs. A bag of food includes: two boxes of cereal, one can of fruit, two cans of vegetables, one canned meat product, two boxes of pasta, one jar/can of pasta sauce, dry milk, and a jar of peanut butter. These items and paper or reusable grocery bags to pack them in are always appreciated.

Little River UCC delivered 6 bags of groceries and 9 packages of diapers to Alternative House from our pantry during the month of October. Thank you for your support of the pantry.
