Twenty-third Sunday After Pentecost
10:00 am Worship

Sunday, October 23

After generations in exile, God's people were finally free to leave Babylon and go home to Jerusalem. But would they? Like a lot of modern refugees who've been uprooted for generations, the exiles weren't sure where home even was now. What would they do when they finally got free? Join us in worship this Sunday at 10:00 am for the conclusion of our 4-part sermon series "Faith in a Foreign Land".

Plus, it's Bible Presentation Sunday and we'll be presenting Bibles to our younger friends for their journey in a life in faith.

Stay for lunch and the congregational meeting afterwards.

Join us for a second Congregational Meeting on Sunday, October 23. We will discuss the 2017 budget, vote on an amendment to the Endowment Fund plan, and vote on the current pastoral housing fund. See the October 23 official call to meeting here.

This Week

Congregational Meeting

Sunday, October 23

Be sure you join us again Sunday for a second Congregational Meeting following worship. First, join us in the social hall for a light lunch of pizza and salad and our usual coffee hour beverages. No need to go to the budget meeting hungry! At 11:45 am, we will begin the meeting. Childcare for children up to age 10 will be provided during the meeting.

The amendment to the Plan of Operations for the Endowment Fund that the Endowment Fund Committee is proposing does the following:

  • Corrects a drafting error in describing the process for calculating the amount of annual disbursements from the Endowment Fund. If the correction is not made, only a few hundred dollars will be available in 2017. If the amendment is approved, $12,000 will be available.
  • Changes the approval process for proposals to be funded. Currently the Board with jurisdiction presents a proposal to the Endowment Fund Committee (EFC). If the EFC determines the proposal is in furtherance of the mission of LRUCC, the EFC will specify the level of funding available for the project. We do not believe this is an appropriate role for the EFC. The proposed amendment provides for integrating proposals for use of the Endowment Fund into the Church’s regular budget process. The Congregation would approve proposals as part of the process of approving the annual budget. The amendment provides that proposals that are not approved as part of the regular budget process may be approved by the Church Council.
  • Facilitates planning for Endowment Fund projects in conjunction with the annual budget by calculating available funds based on 2nd quarter data, rather than 3rd quarter. This means information is available to Boards and Committees in mid-July.

The proposal makes no change in the intended process for calculating money available from the Fund. It makes no change in the Endowment Fund Policy, It makes no change in the distribution of money among the authorized uses. A copy of the proposed amendment may be viewed here.

Bible Presentation Sunday

Sunday, October 23

Each year, our congregation celebrates the growth of our younger friends as they journey in their life in faith. On Sunday, October 23 we will be presenting the SPARK Story Bible to our children entering Godly Play (age 3, or ages 3-5 who have recently started attending LRUCC); and The Children’s Bible (NRSV) to our children currently in third grade. May God bless our children, and their Bibles to their use!

Shaw Community Ministry Thanksgiving Collection

Sunday, October 23 & 30

The Board of Outreach and Social Justice will be collecting in-kind donations to create Thanksgiving baskets for Shaw Community Ministry. Each year, Shaw Community Ministry gives gifts of food to residents of the Shaw neighborhood in Washington, DC in order to provide low-income families with supplies to make their own holiday meals. The goal this year is to feed at least 75 families a Thanksgiving meal through donations by several local UCC churches. Little River UCC is committed to providing 20 of the Thanksgiving baskets.

Shaw Community Ministry has put together a list of requested items for each basket. Each basket should also contain a $25 Giant grocery store gift card for families to buy fresh items for their holiday meal. Reusable grocery bags with the shopping lists and a sign-up sheet will available in the atrium Sunday, October 23 and October 30.

If you are interested in participating, please sign up at the table in the atrium for a bag of requested items (please take a bag), a gift card, or both. All donations should be brought to church by Sunday, November 6 for delivery to Shaw the following week.

Coffee Team Volunteers Needed

Coffee Teams A, E, and K could each use some new team members to help with coffee service during Followship Hour following the service. Helping out with coffee service is a great way to make new friends or catch up with old pals. Now that it’s one service we get to see friends that perhaps we rarely saw before. It’s really quite easy, requires little effort and in most cases you are only asked to commit to four Sunday’s a year. If you can help out speak with Kathleen Styles (Team A), James Taylor (Team K), Clark Beil or Judy Jacobs Miller (recruiting for Team E). You can find a list of teams on the church website under Sunday Volunteer Duties. Any other questions you can call Clark at 703-638-8909.
