White Gift Christmas Tree Trimming and Gift Tags

Friday, November 20

In preparation for the White Gift Service, our White Gift Christmas tree stands in the atrium to express the Christmas hopes of young children from low-income families served by ACCA, Main Street Child Development Center, and Shaw Community Ministry. A White Gift Christmas tree trimming gathering will take place on Friday, November 20 from 12-4 pm to prepare the tags and decorate the tree. Tree trimming helpers are welcome to join the gathering! Gift tags and a sign-up sheet (new this year to assist the Board of Outreach and Social Justice in tracking gifts) will be available from Sunday, November 22 through Sunday, December 6. Please take only as many tags as you are able to provide gifts. Thank you for your generosity this holiday season!

Welcoming Warmth: Coat Drive for Thrive DC

Thank you to everyone who brought in items already for the Thrive DC coat drive for the homeless in Washington, DC. An initial delivery of five large bags was delivered to Thrive DC for their November distribution. We can still accept more. Do you have any coats, hats, scarves or gloves in your closet that could warm someone in need this winter? The collection box will be available in the Narthex until November 29 and the final delivery will be made to Thrive DC on Monday, November 30.

YOU Put the Fun in Funshops!

Let the Advent party begin! The first Sunday of Advent is fast approaching – it's November 29 – and that means that Fun Shop time is upon us! We're super-excited! (See all the exclamation points?) We need your help to make our Fun Shops well, fun! We're looking for set-up help, clean-up help, craft table "monitors," and hospitality help. There will be a sign-up available in the narthex, so, you know, sign up. Questions? Ask a Deacon, or check in with This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Ten Thousand Villages Shopping Update

The Board of Outreach and Social Justice will not be hosting a sale by Ten Thousand Villages this year for the holiday season. We encourage anyone interested in purchasing unique, handmade fair-trade gifts from around the world to visit their storefront at 915 King Street in Old Town Alexandria or browse their extensive online offerings at www.tenthousandvillages.com.

Stewardship Season is Upon us!

If you have not yet made your pledge, please pick up a pledge card from the information table in the narthex, or print a copy here. We rely on your pledges to be able to responsibly plan for our expenses in 2016. Thank you!

Photos for Church Database

Advent Fun Shops and Hanging of the Greens

Sunday, November 29

Enjoy a joyful and magic Sunday afternoon together celebrating the approach of Christmas. We will have many Advent centered crafts. Thank you to our volunteers and the Pilgrim Youth Fellowship who help make this special Little River UCC tradition possible. The Pilgrim Youth Fellowship (PYF) will be available to wrap your gifts for the White Gift Service during the afternoon.

We’ll also hold our annual cookie swap during the Funshops, so dust off your holiday recipes. Bakers should bring three dozen cookies to the church kitchen that afternoon: two dozen to swap and a dozen to make treats for members of our congregation who need a little extra light in their lives this Advent season.

Also that afternoon, a merry crew will deck the halls and sanctuary. All are invited to join the fun, and give the church a “sprucing” up for the Advent and Christmas season.

First Friday

Friday, December 4

Bring your children to First Friday from 6:30 to 9:30 pm! First Friday is a kids' night out program designed to give parents an evening to themselves. All children in our community are welcome, whether or not their families attend Little River UCC. More specific information and registration is forthcoming.

Advent Spiral Walk

Sunday, December 6

The Advent Spiral comes to us from Germany, where it is practiced in Waldorf Schools. Sometimes it’s called the Winter Garden. This lovely tradition provides a way to help us slow down, pause, and live for an Advent moment of expectation and peace. Please join us in the sanctuary at 5:00pm for a time to pause, meditate, and just "be." All ages are welcome. (There will be candles on the floor, so please dress accordingly -- no long skirts or shawls.)

Food Pantry

Sunday, December 6

Special requests for this month donation are powdered milk, pasta sauce (canned preferred), and cereal.

Intersections: Sacred Conversation on Race

Sunday, December 6

We are a congregation founded and grounded in affirming all people regardless of race and ethnicity. To deepen the Sacred Conversation on Race and learn how race intersects with many justice issues, we will gather on Sunday, December 6 at 11:00 a.m. in Room 8 for prayer and thought on the continuing issues of racism.
