Fair Trade

Sunday, October 18

Fair Trade Sales are happening this Sunday. Stock up on your supplies of coffee, chocolate, and Palestinian olive oil between services while providing fair compensation to farmers in less-developed countries. A portion of the olive sales supports Tent of Nations and its peace-building programs in the West Bank.

The Potomac Association 2015 Fall Meeting

Saturday, October 24

Little River will be hosting the Potomac Association's Fall Meeting. At the meeting the group will:

  • Explore various roles and responsibilities of the Association, the Conference and the National Office and discuss some of the important work that is being done in these settings.
  • Receive reports from the officers of the Board of Directors, each Standing committee, and any other person or organization as requested by the Board of Directors.
  • Vote on the proposed Association budget for 2016.

Consecration Sunday / Bible Presentation Sunday / Pot Luck Brunch (One Worship Service)

Sunday, October 25

On Sunday, October 25 we celebrate Consecration Sunday and Bible Presentation Sunday. We will have one 10:00 a.m. worship where we will receive your annual stewardship pledges. In addition, we will present Bibles to our children entering Godly Play (age 3) and to our children currently in third grade. All members, friends, and visitors are welcome to share in this celebration of abundant giving by joining us at a pot luck brunch immediately following the service. Verne Arens Designated Pastor Emeritus at Little River UCC

At the congregational meeting on Sunday, October 11, the Reverend Dr. Verne Arens was designated Pastor Emeritus for Little River by acclimation. Verne served as Little River's second senior pastor from 1988 until his retirement in 2011. Verne and his wife, Julie, live in the local area and he will be welcomed back to Little River at a special service in 2016. Further information on Verne's ministry and accomplishments at Little River can be read here.

Church Governance Update

A presentation on church governance was also provided at the congregational meeting on October 11 and is under active discussion with plans to present it at the Little River annual meeting on Sunday, January 31, 2016. A copy of the PowerPoint presentation which describes the proposed concept can be downloaded here. Further discussions will be scheduled for this fall and early winter. Questions or further thoughts should be directed toward Tom Ross on the Governance Renewal Committee.

Remembering Loved Ones Recently Deceased

On November 1, we will offer prayers of thanksgiving for loved ones who have died during the past 12 months. We invite you to contribute the names of family members and close friends whose loss you mourn. New Member Information Session

Sunday, November 1

Each year at this time, we reach out to those who have visited our church in worship, gatherings, and programs. We hope that your time spent with Little River UCC family has been memorable, and that you would consider learning more about the mission, vision, and ministry of our congregation.

We also know from past gatherings many people come and visit, and participate as “Friends” of the church for many years. This invitation goes out to you as well. Maybe you are feeling God’s gentle tug to share more deeply in the ministry of Little River.

In either case, you are invited to come and share in this year’s New Member Information Session on November 1 (1:00-2:30 p.m.). Childcare and light snacks will be provided.

This gathering is offered to help familiarize you with the many faces of the ministry at Little River. We welcome you to learn more about our ministries. At the conclusion of the session, you are invited to join in membership with the congregation.

First Friday

Friday, November 6

Bring your children to First Friday on November 6, from 6:30 to 9:30 pm! The children will enjoy dinner, games, and crafts while you enjoy a little free time. The cost is $15 per child, with a family maximum of $30. Registration forms are available on this website. First Friday is a kids' night out program designed to give parents an evening to themselves. Volunteers provide creative and exciting entertainment for the children in a safe and fun atmosphere at the church. First Friday is for children aged six months through 12 years. All children in our community are welcome, whether or not their families attend Little River UCC. Tell your friends and family!

Women's Book Group

Sunday, November 8

Please join the Little River Women's Book Group as they discuss the long-time best seller Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline in Room 7 from 12:15 - 1:30 p.m. A long journey from home and the struggle to find it again form the heart of the intertwined stories that make up this moving novel. Kline illuminates a largely hidden chapter of American history, while portraying the coming-of-age of two resilient young women.

Cookies for College Students

Sunday, November 8

On Sunday, November 8, from 11:30 am - 1:00 pm, the Deacons will pack cookies for college students. The cookies are our expression of love and good wishes to them, whether near or far, as they contend with the demands of college. Everyone is welcome to help with this project either with a donation of cookies or your time to help pack the cookies. If you wish to donate cookies (they should be easily packable and nut free!), please drop them off in the church kitchen on the morning of the 8th, labeled "Cookies for College Students". Welcoming Warmth: Coat Drive for Thrive DC

November

LRUCC is partnering with Thrive DC to provide coats for the homeless in Washington DC. Do you have any coats, hats, scarves or gloves in your closet that could warm someone in need this winter? A collection box will be available in the Narthex from the end of October through the month of November. The first delivery will be made to Thrive DC on Monday, November 2 with a second delivery to follow on November 30.
