Women's Book Group

Sunday, May 17

The Women's Book Group will meet in Room 7 from 12:15 to 1:30 to discuss Dream Chasers of the West by B. L. Wettstein. It is the true story of Clara Augusta Miller, who left Minnesota at the age of 30 and moved to Montana to file a homestead on free land. She anticipated finding happiness with a piece of land and a Jersey cow. Join us for an interesting discussion of her life and the outcome of her dream.

Footsteps Education Series

Footsteps welcomes Congressman Don Beyer, former Ambassador to Switzerland, to the class. You don’t have to be going on the Footsteps trip to enjoy this series. Help Send Shaw Kids to Camp

Shaw Community Ministry continues its annual spring drive to raise funds for Camp Shining Star, a summer day camp that provides a wonderful out-of-school alternative for inner-city children in Washington, DC. The focus is on fun, but the camp also provides important enrichment experiences for kids who need help achieving and maintaining grade-level skills over the summer. This year camp will emphasize Shaw Community Values. Each week will have its own theme related to civic engagement, and over the seven weeks campers will complete four service projects.

The Board of Outreach and Social Justice continues to accept donations in the narthex between services through May 17. Shaw Community Ministry is very thankful for the ongoing support from Little River UCC!

Honoring Our Graduates

Deadline: Monday, May 18 for Sunday, June 7

On Sunday, June 7, we will honor members of our church family who graduated this spring or any time since last June. We will recognize graduates from high school, college, technical school, and graduate school. Please include the graduate’s name, school and degree, relationship (if not a Little River UCC family member) and, for high school graduates, whether they will continue their education, military service, etc. Also, please let the office know about any address or e-mail changes for graduates listed in the church directory. Summer Worship Schedule: One Service

Please note: beginning Sunday, May 24, we will worship at 10:00 am only. We will resume worship at 9:30 and 11:00 on September 13, the Sunday after Labor Day.

Cleanup Day

We're doing some spring cleaning! Our Board of Trustees has scheduled a spring work day to clean up the church on Saturday, May 30, starting at 8:30 a.m. Please mark your calendars for this event. It will be a good time to roll up your sleeves and help keep our church looking its best!

Celebration Sunday

Celebrating Faith Formation

Please join us May 31 at our single 10:00 worship service as we celebrate Faith Formation at Little River! Come see what we’ve learned this past year and help us reflect on how we travel together on this lifelong journey. We’ll honor both our participants and our dedicated Faith Formation leaders as a part of this service.

All-Church Picnic

After worship we will celebrate with the annual picnic for our church family and friends. Be there to mark the start of the summer season in style! Please bring a potluck side dish or dessert and a good appetite for your early lunch. Share conversation and food with dear friends and new acquaintances.

"Strengthen the Church" Offering

Sunday, May 31

Each day, visions and dreams arise in the hearts of many in the United Church of Christ. The UCC's Strengthen the Church offering, which we will receive May 31, can help them become reality. Contributions are used across the country to support new places of worship, awaken new ideas in existing churches, and develop spiritual life in our youth and young adults.

Strengthen the Church funds will spread God's still-speaking message far and wide. Contributions may be made May 31 by check to Little River UCC, with memo "Strengthen the Church," or at any time on this website, using the Online Giving feature at the bottom of this and most other pages.

Interfaith Pride Worship Service

Saturday, June 6

Join the ninth annual Northern Virginia Interfaith Pride Worship Service hosted by People of Faith for Equality in Virginia-POFEV, Northern Virginia Network. The time and location of this year’s service are being planned. Keep an eye out for details here and at the POFEV-NoVA Facebook page.

Speaking the Truth in Love: Summer Sermon Series

Starts Sunday, June 7

On June 7, Little River will launch a summer sermon series about “Speaking the Truth in Love.” Pastors David and Hank will be reflecting with us on the many joys and challenges of faithful communication at home, in church, and in the wider world. Be sure to join us for this lively series!

Central Atlantic Conference Meeting

Friday-Sunday, June 12-14

The fifty-first annual meeting of the Central Atlantic Conference of the United Church of Christ will take place the second weekend in June at the University of Delaware, in Newark. All are welcome!

Capital Pride Parade

Saturday, June 13

On Saturday, June 13, the annual Capital Pride Parade will kick off at 4:30 near Dupont Circle! The United Church of Christ is involved in the celebration, and we at Little River are honored to help support this public witness. Our congregation's contingent will gather at the church at 2:30 on parade day to take the Metro down to the staging area. For those with mobility needs, we can arrange for a seat in the Pride Jeep, which departs at 1:00 (please contact the church office to reserve a seat).

Safe Church Training

Sunday, June 21

All teens and adults are invited to attend Safe Church training Sunday, June 21 at 11:30-1:30 in Room 8. Safe Church training is required every two years for anyone who works with children or youth at Little River—including child care, church school, the PYF youth group, and the Welcome Center.Training is open to everyone and is encouraged for all. Snacks will be provided.

Opportunities for Sharing

UCC Disaster Response in Nepal

The recent earthquake in Nepal has been on the hearts and minds of many of us at Little River UCC. Please know that through One Great Hour of Sharing we are responding. For the latest information, visit the OGHS website at and follow the links in the posted Tweets.

Thanks to your generous donations in March to Little River's annual OGHS offering, we have already joined other churches to help ameliorate this still-critical situation. If you wish to give further help to ongoing relief efforts, following the OGHS "Please give" link or write a check payable to Little River UCC with memo "International Disaster Relief - Nepal."

Women's Covenant Groups

A new covenant group formed during the Women's Ministry Tea and Talk on May 3, with a beginning focus on "Living Through Loss." Members of the group committed to meeting three times, then diciding about ongoing commitments. Three other covenant groupls have been ongoing for about two years. Some are in the process of expanding.
