This Week...

It's Official!  Pastor Lindsey Installed

Sunday, January 11

The Rev. Dr. David Lindsey is formally installed by the UCC Potomac Association as our senior pastor at a special worship service at Little River on Sunday, January 11 at 3:00. At this moment of celebration and rededication for our whole church family, we welcome David into this new level of recognition for the bond that unites us.

Preschool Open House

Wednesday and Friday, January 14 and 16

Our congregation has a longstanding relationship with Annandale Cooperative Preschool, with whom we share our building. The Preschool will be hosting two open houses for the 2015-2016 school year,  from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 14, and Friday, January 16. Parents and children are invited to learn more about their licensed and accredited cooperative preschool programs for children ages 2-4 years. Applications for the first round of admissions are due by Thursday, January 20. Please note that Little River members receive priority in this first round of admissions.

Flower Calendar

The 2015 Flower Calendar is posted on the community board in the social hall. Donating flowers for worship is a great way to celebrate a significant anniversary, a recent graduation, or even the passing or memory of a loved one. Please see the display for more information and sign up to provide for flowers on the date you want.

Footsteps Trip

July 13-25

The number of prospective travelers still stands at thirteen people out of the twenty or more needed to assure a reduced price. Reformation Tours needs to know that we have a definite number committed to the trip. The group will visit Reformation sites and learn about John Calvin and Ulrich Zwingli, as well as riding the Glacier Express and visiting Zermatt at the base of the Matterhorn. Our congregation was founded as an integrated church in the midst of the civil rights movement of the 1950s. Join us for a 5:00 p.m. celebration of the legacy of Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., and the many folks who worked for justice in those years!

Pilgrim Youth Fellowship Lock-In

Annual Meeting

All are welcome to attend our congregation’s Annual Meeting, which will begin around 11:00, on Sunday, January 25, immediately after our single worship service at 10:00. Members of Little River UCC will have a vote as we seek to approve a budget and a slate of nominees for 2015. Child care will be provided. 1/02

"Our Whole Lives" Parents' Interest Meeting

Our Whole Lives (OWL), a sexuality and spirituality course designed by the United Church of Christ and the Unitarian Universalist Church, is being offered this year to youth in grades 10-12.   The class will be led by Cheryl and Michael Urban, who have received OWL teacher training.  Parents of prepective students are required to attend an orientation on Sunday, January 25 at 9:00 a.m. in the Conference Room and to sign a permission slip for their youth.  Classes will meet Sundays from February 1 through April 26. 1/09

Finding Your Way through Loss and Grief

This four-session learning experience is for those who want to understand the many kinds of loss we experience, as well as the tasks and process that are part of the experience of grief. The sessions will be held on each Sunday afternoons in February 3:00 to 4:15, led by Little River member the Rev. Dr. Robert "Rob" Peters, Jr. These information sessions are designed to give participants useful information and tools for understanding and navigating one of life’s most intense emotional experiences. First Friday

Friday, February 6

First Friday is a children’s night out program for young people age six months through 12 years, designed to give parents an evening to themselves.  Between 6:30 and 9:30, volunteers provide dinner and creative and exciting entertainment for the children in a safe and fun atmosphere at the church. All children in our community are welcome, whether or not their families attend Little River UCC—tell your friends and family!

The cost is $15 per child, with a family maximum of $30.  If you pre-register by February 1, the cost is $10 with a family maximum of $25! Register on the First Friday web page or at church on Sundays, between services in the narthex. Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday

February 17-18

Get ready for for the start of Lent—the preparation for the most important Christian holiday season—by joining church friends for a pancake supper on Shrove Tuesday from 6:00 to 7:30.  Come when you can; a blessing will be said at 6:30.  Pancakes, sausages, and fruit salad will be served, with vegetarian and gluten-free options available.  RSVP to Donna Jones in the church office either This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or by phone (703-978-3060).  Donations by cash or check will be received at the door.  We also need volunteer pancake flippers, set-up helpers, and clean-up angels!  Sign up on the bulletin board in the social hall after any Sunday service.

Lent officially begins with our Ash Wednesday service on February 18. This quiet, reflective service will include the sacrament of Communion and the imposition of ashes. The service begins at 7:30 pm.  Care will be provided for children age two and under.  Please join us in this beautiful, ancient tradition.

Open Mic Night

On Saturday, February 21, Little River will once again host our annual Open Mic Night! Everyone is welcome to share a piece of music (sung or played), a reading of poetry or prose, a dance, or whatever secret talent you would like to present. This is an all-ages event. If you have music for which you would like band accompaniment (which is encouraged!) please get it to Dave Shepherd by Sunday, February 1.
