Ecclesiastes: A Listen Up! Bible Study begins July 13

God's word is alive. God will always have something new to say to us. That's why the purpose of the Listen Up! Bible Study series is not simply learning information about the Bible. It is hearing God speak.

Sometimes considered the most curmudgeonly and cynical of all the books of the Bible, Ecclesiastes is also praised for telling it like it is. It addresses eternal problems that have always troubled human society. This book of wisdom also reminds us that the great joys in life are fairly simple. It offers soothing certainty about what it means to enjoy the good life: waiting, expecting, with open arms, to receive day by day the good things that come from God.

Sessions are:

  • Sunday, July 13 - Ecclesiastes 1 & 2
  • Sunday, July 20 - Ecclesiastes 3 - 4:8
  • Sunday, July 27 - Ecclesiastes 4:9 - 6:12
  • Sunday, August 3 - Ecclesiastes 7 - 12

Classes meet at 2:00 pm at the home of Chris Weakley, the class leader. Please sign up in the narthex or reply to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . 7/4

The Women's Book Group will meet on Sunday, July 20 at 11:15 am, in Room 7. The group will discuss The End of Your Life Book Club, by Will Schwalbe. This non-fiction book is about two love stories. One is between the author and his mother who has pancreatic cancer. The other is the love the mother and son have of books. They form a two-person book club and discuss books as they wait for appointments and treatments. Please join us for a thoughtful discussion about this loving way of dealing with end of life issues. 6/6

Little River UCC Hosts Exhibit by Danish Artist Bo Gorzelak Pedersen

This month, Little River UCC has the honor of hosting an exhibit of artwork by Danish expressionist artist Bo Gorzelak Pedersen. The exhibit includes a series of paintings and drawings on biblical themes. Some of it is more representational, other is more abstract, all of it is interesting! The exhibit is on display in our hallway through the end of July. You can get a sneak peek of the work online. Many thanks to Rev. Julie Holm for shepherding the exhibit to Little River UCC, and to Judy Miller and her team of volunteers for installing it!7/4

Endowment Fund Progress

The good news: The Little River UCC Endowment Fund is growing. The challenge: It still needs to reach its minimum goal before it can benefit church programs.

In 2006, LRUCC established a formal Endowment Fund with a written policy and operating plan. It was created to provide ministries that might not otherwise be possible. The fund may be used for four purposes:

  • special outreach projects as requested by the board of Outreach and Social Justice;
  • innovative ministries or programs, and/or capital projects at LRUCC;
  • support of the church operating budget as requested by the Trustees;
  • theological or continuing education.

When the endowment was established, the congregation stipulated that no payment be made from the fund until the total amount contributed reaches $250,000. After that, a portion of annual dividends and growth in value, but never contributions, may be spent. So far, the fund has received $184,000, leaving us $66,000 short of our minimum goal.

Where do contributions come from? Bequests that come from estates are the primary source of support for Little River's endowment. Second, some individuals make periodic contributions when they receive unexpected gifts, inheritances, or tax refunds. A third source is memorial giving from members and friends of Little River when a beloved member or friend dies.

Where and how is the money invested? The Endowment Fund is invested with United Church Funds, the UCC foundation in New York. The good news is that the current market value of the endowment (contributions plus dividends plus growth) is approximately $290,000.

Even though we haven't yet reached our initial goal, the endowment has come a long way. Now we have an opportunity to make further progress. Our hope is that over the next several months the Endowment Fund will see significant growth, and that it will reach the goal of $250,000 in contributions during Little River's 60th anniversary year in 2015.

If you have questions about the Endowment Fund or wish to make a gift, please speak with a pastor or a member of the committee. Members are Rob Peters (Chair), Jen Beckman, Fran DuRocher, Brian Payne, and Jerry Surbey. 7/4
