Our 61st Year Revised March 30, 2014

This Weekend

Lenten Music Sunday, March 30

During Advent and Lent, the two reflective and introspective seasons of the church year, the Sanctuary Choir presents a larger scale work with a chamber orchestra. This year, on Sunday, March 30, at both the 9:30 and 11:00 am worship services, the choir will lead worship sharing J. S. Bach's Christ Lag in Todesbanden, BWV 4, one of his earliest cantatas. Scholars call this piece an example of Bach's painting narrative in music. 3/6

One Great Hour of Sharing, March 30

One of Jesus' last actions was to pray for unity among his disciples: "that all may be one." We hold to that enduring vision, although we know that the world presents us with challenges to its fulfillment. One way we, Jesus' followers, can respond to barriers we see around us is by giving generously through One Great Hour of Sharing.

One of five mission offerings of the United Church of Christ, the One Great Hour of Sharing offering will be accepted during worship on Sunday, March 30. Envelopes will be made available, and church school members are receiving coin boxes and sharing calendars. Gifts also may be made online.

Gifts through this offering empower people in poverty to learn a trade, raise their own food, and grow in faith. As people united in Christ, we help provide access to healthy food, good education, and excellent health care. This offering builds bridges, creates spaces where people love and connect, and reminds us that we are united as one people, belonging to one family in God. Please give generously, for as long as one person is in need, we are all in need. 3/6

Dr. Anil Henry's Visit—Planning Committee Interest Meeting, March 30

Have you ever noticed the list of Little River UCC staff at the end of the Sunday worship bulletin? Included at the end of that list is "Anil Henry, Global Ministries Partner in India." Well, Dr. Henry is coming from India (by way of Tennessee) to visit with our Little River congregation on Sunday, May 11. We are excited to host Dr. Henry on Mother's Day weekend and look forward to sharing worship with him on that day. To assure an extravagant welcome for Dr. Henry, we need your help. The Board of Outreach and Social Justice is seeking interested participants to join a planning committee. A brief interest session will be held on Sunday, March 30, from 10:30 to 10:50 am, in the Conference Room. All who are interested in helping plan Dr. Henry's visit are welcome. Lenten Soup and Discussion: The Art of Lent, April 2

Anointed, Healed: Isaiah's messianic prophesy and Gabriel's announcement to Mary

Join us on Wednesday, April 2, in the social hall for the fourth in our Lenten Soup and Discussion series. We will share a simple meal of soup and bread beginning at 6:30 pm. Then, at 7:15 pm, we will begin our discussion. This week's topic: Our scriptures are full of stories where the most unexpected person is chosen for an amazing part of God's work in our world. We will look deeply at what it means for us to feel chosen—that we belong—through our own stories painted with watercolors.

To assist with cleanup following supper, you are encouraged to bring your own dish and utensils.

Annual Brunch for College Ministry, April 5

One of Little River's benevolences is United College Ministries in Northern Virginia. This ecumenical ministry, known as ARISE at the George Mason Univeristy (GMU) campus, depends on financial support and volunteer assistance from churches and from individual church members who want to ensure that students have support for their faith journeys while on campus. This ministry seeks to develop students' faith walks through four main areas: worship, service, fellowship, and small groups. The Little River UCC Board of Outreach and Social Justice encourages members and friends of Little River to attend the annual ARISE brunch on Saturday April 5, 2014, at 10:00 am at GMU. This brunch will provide an opportunity not only to learn more about ways to support ARISE, but also to hear the Rev. Dr. Ray Buchanan, founder and president of "Stop Hunger Now," an organization our church also supports. To attend, visit the website at or call This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Intersections: Sacred Conversation on Race, April 6

We are a congregation founded and grounded in affirming all people regardless of race and ethnicity. To deepen the Sacred Conversation on Race and learn how race intersects with many justice issues, we gather on the first Sunday morning of each month at 8:30 for prayer and thought on the continuing issues of racism. Please join us for our next conversation Sunday, April 6 in Room 8. Each month we focus our conversation on a specific issue within the intertwined issues of racism. 3/19

Seder Dinner, April 6

Come join us on Sunday, April 6, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the social hall for an intergenerational Seder dinner. Coming Soon...

Fifth Sunday Green Space Cleanup—Postponed

Our next Fifth Sunday project will be a green space cleanup at Roundtree Park, about four miles from Little River UCC. Originally scheduled for March 30, this outing has been postponed due to very un-springlike weather. Watch for news of a new date.

When this springtime intergenerational outdoor activity does happen, participants should wear long sleeves and long pants. There will be a scavenger hunt for the young and young-at-heart. Low-mobility participants are needed as "certifiers" for scavenger hunt results. We look forward to sharing this time together outdoors in stewardship of God's green spaces. 3/30

Little River on the Go, April 12

Let's get together on Saturday, April 12, from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm to share a morning of exercise, fellowship, and a potluck lunch. We will enjoy the cherry blossoms, viewed close up or panoramically from the Virginia side. We can cross the 14th Street Bridge on foot or by bike or stroll on the Virginia side along the Mount Vernon Trail. We'll avoid the driving and parking hassles by meeting at Columbia Island Marina near the LBJ Grove. Bring a picnic dish for our potluck lunch. Faith in Film Returns with Chasing Ice, April 13

Faith in Film returns on Sunday, April 13, from 12:30 to 2:00 pm in Room 8 to share lunch and to view Chasing Ice. Acclaimed photographer James Balog was once a skeptic about climate change. But through his Extreme Ice Survey, he discovers undeniable evidence of our changing planet. In Chasing Ice, Balog deploys revolutionary time-lapse cameras to capture a multi-year record of the world's changing glaciers.

Easter Offering, April 20

On Easter Sunday, April 20, a special offering will be received at all services. The Board of Outreach and Social Justice asks for your support of this offering, which will fund our third annual Stop Hunger Now event in September. Last fall, Little River UCC members and friends packed over 20,000 nutritious dehydrated meals that were sent to feed the hungry in Burkina Faso. Thank you for tremendous support in 2013. Save the date for September 28, 2014! 3/26

We're Thankful For...

An Extravagant Welcome Indeed! Little River Calls Rev. David B. Lindsey

Last Sunday, March 23, the membership of Little River UCC voted overwhelmingly to call the Rev. David Lindsey to be our third senior pastor, effective June 30, 2014.

Preceding the congregational meeting was a Saturday full of activities with David, which included a meeting and dialogue with the residents of the Greenspring community, followed by a luncheon meeting and discussion with the church council, a discussion with the youth of the church, an activity with children, and a reception followed by a question and answer period. Throughout it all David had an opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions, ask and respond to questions, and meet many of the members of Little River UCC.

On Sunday morning, David led the worship service preaching on Remember the Poor? before the congregational meeting that affirmed him as our new senior pastor. He and his fiancée, Carrie Dobmeier, returned to the church to join in a celebration and to officially accept the congregation's call. In accepting, David expressed appreciation and thanks to the search committee, the congregation, and others who helped make this happen.

David and Carrie will be returning to Minneapolis to complete his ministry at Lynnhurst Congregational Church and to complete his requirements for his Doctor of Ministry degree in preaching before joining us at the end of June.

Little River is indebted to everyone who participated in the search process, especially those who served on the search committee, as well as to those who made the candidate weekend such a success. It was truly an extravagant welcome for our new senior pastor and his fiancée! Welcome David and Carrie! 3/26

We Need You...

Christian Education Survey

In the hope of providing the most meaningful experiences in faith formation for each person at Little River UCC—child, youth, and adult—we are asking all members and friends to take a moment and complete an online survey. This will provide the Board of Christian Education good feedback as they work to design and plan the faith formation opportunities for the summer and upcoming 2014-2015 program year. The survey will take you about 15 minutes. It will be open until Monday, March 31. We will report back on the survey results after Easter. To complete the survey please visit: We all thank you in advance for telling us about your experiences this year and your hopes for years to come!2/27
