Worship of God is at the heart of the Little River UCC community. The congregation comes together on Sunday mornings to renew its faith through prayer, receive inspiration through music, absorb the thought-provoking sermons , and share fellowship with friends and newcomers over light refreshments in the social hall following worship.
We gather in worship and celebration weekly at 9:30 and 11:00 am from Labor Day through the end of May. During the summer months we gather at 10:00 am.
Children are a priority in our faith community and are always welcome in worship. Care is available for infants and small children during all services. Church school for children age 3 through grade 12 meets most Sundays at 9:30 am from September through May.
The first Sunday of each month, children join in the whole worship service. That service is adapted to meet the needs of all generations and is meant to enhance and expand the children’s experience and knowledge of the communal worship. The sacrament of Communion is served and children are welcome to receive the bread and cup at their families' discretion.
If the child prefers, a planned activity is organized during the sermon to enhance their experience. The leaders will help the children understand the meaning and actions of Communion. At parents’ request, the leaders will help the children to return in time to share in the cup and loaf.
Music is very important to our worship. Our services are enhanced by a pipe-organ and choral music ranging from classical to contemporary. Two adult choirs, a youth choir, and a children’s choir share in leading worship. Special music during Advent and Lent are annual highlights.
The Sacrament of Holy Communion is observed monthly, normally on the first Sunday of the month. All are welcome to participate as the bread and juice are shared. Gluten-free bread is always provided. The Sacrament of Baptism for adults and children is observed during worship as requested and arranged with a pastor.
Communion is served at the 11:00 am service every Sunday during Lent.
Our labyrinth offers a very special opportunity for spiritual reflection, prayer, and meditation. Set in our wooded grove, it is a place apart from hectic lives.
Special worship offerings are scheduled throughout the year, such as healing services, Ember Evenings for reflection, and Lenten and Advent services.
Lenten services in the period leading up to Easter include worship at 7:30 p.m. on Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday.
The White Gift Service, one of Little River’s oldest and most cherished traditions, is celebrated every Advent. Members and friends take wish-list tags from a special Christmas tree and purchase gifts for children served by several local agencies. Then, on the second Sunday evening of December, we gather to sing familiar Christmas music led by the children’s and youth choirs and experience the Christmas story brought to life in our sanctuary. The service reaches a high point when members of the congregation follow the three Magi to the manger and offer their own gifts wrapped in white, the liturgical color of Christmas. The symbolism of the gift-giving and the outpouring of generosity evident in the abundance of gifts left at the manger scene are inspiring to all who participate, from very young children to adults who have come for many years. Refreshments follow the service.
