Sunday Morning Church School
Preschool and pre-reader children are introduced to Bible stories through Godly Play. Godly Play is a Montessori-style learning environment, focused on the needs of children at this place on life’s journey.
Godly Play is based upon the recognition that children have an innate sense of the presence of God. All they lack is the appropriate language to help them identify and express this innate sense so it can be explored and strengthened. The Godly Play approach teaches classical Christian language in a way that enhances the child’s authentic experience of God so it can contribute to the creative life of the child and the world.
The class leaders are certified to share the curriculum, offering a wonder-filled encounter with key stories in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. Learn more from the Godly Play Foundation.
Children in kindergarten through fifth grade are invited to attend active learning classes divided by school grade and learner’s comfort. The volunteer leaders use Seasons of the Spirit, a lectionary-based curriculum.
Seasons of the Spirit is designed to invite the learner to explore meaning and mystery in the Bible through the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL), a three-year method of encountering the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. Each lesson is written to magnify the readings. The scriptures shared in the classroom are the same shared in the sanctuary, adding to a family’s ability to share in faith formation together.
The class leaders are seasoned veterans and are well-versed to share the curriculum. Using their unique talents and interests, each class experiences a fun and faith-filled engagement with the week’s scriptures. Sharing God’s Word
In recognition of our commitment to nurture children and families in their faith formation, Bibles are offered at the beginning of each program year at specific places on a child’s faith journey. When a child is born, a pastor brings the gift of a children's Bible story book. When a child begins attending Godly Play (three years of age), they are presented with the SPARK Story Bible. This collection of stories from the Hebrew and Christian scriptures welcomes the kids through colorful art and rich retellings of 150 of the most popular Bible stories. When a child enters third grade (eight years of age), they are presented a Children’s Bible-New Revised Standard Version (NRSV), with study notes and guides written for their learning level. Upon completion of the Confirmation Class, each youth is presented with The Oxford Annotated Bible: New Revised Standard Version (NRSV).
